Suppressing small-scale self-focusing of high-power femtosecond pulses

چکیده
Abstract It was shown experimentally that for a 65-fs 17-J pulse, the effect of filamentation instability, also known as small-scale self-focusing, is much weaker than predicted by stationary and nonstationary theoretical models high B-integral values. Although this discrepancy has been left unexplained at moment, in practice no signs may allow breakthrough nonlinear pulse post-compression laser energy.

Self-focusing Distance of Very High Power Laser Pulses.
We show numerically for continuous-wave beams and experimentally for femtosecond pulses propagating in air, that the collapse distance of intense laser beams in a bulk Kerr medium scales as 1/P;1/2 for input powers P that are moderately above the critical power for self focusing, but that at higher powers the collapse distance scales as 1/P.
متن کاملPicosecond to femtosecond pulses from high power self mode-locked ytterbium rod-type fiber laser.
We have designed an ytterbium rod-type fiber laser oscillator with tunable pulse duration. This system that delivers more than 10 W of average power is self mode-locked. It yields femtosecond to picosecond laser pulses at a repetition rate of 74 MHz. The pulse duration is adjusted by changing the spectral width of a band pass filter that is inserted in the laser cavity. Using volume Bragg grati...
متن کاملSelf-focusing of femtosecond surface plasmon polaritons.
We study the propagation of femtosecond pulses in nonlinear metal-dielectric plasmonic waveguiding structures by employing the finite-difference time-domain numerical method. Self-focusing of plasmon pulses is observed for defocusing Kerr-like nonlinearity of the dielectric medium due to normal dispersion. We compare the nonlinear propagation of plasmon pulses along a single metal-dielectric in...
متن کاملSmall-Scale Self-Focusing Effects in Tapered Optical Beams
This memo presents a simple analysis of small-scale self focusing or filamentation effects in strongly diverging or converging optical beams (“tapered beams”) propagating in nonlinear or saturable optical media. In contrast to the collimated beam case where the nonlinear perturbations can be modelled as uniformly spaced periodic ripples, the nonlinear phase and amplitude ripples in the tapered-...
متن کاملHigh-precision spectroscopy with counterpropagating femtosecond pulses.
An experimental realization of high-precision direct frequency comb spectroscopy using counterpropagating femtosecond pulses on two-photon atomic transitions is presented. The Doppler broadened background signal, hampering precision spectroscopy with ultrashort pulses, is effectively eliminated with a simple pulse shaping method. As a result, all four 5S-7S two-photon transitions in a rubidium ...
